Abstract

The presentation will focus on three core topics within hydraulic turbines: Fow measurement, Fow control, and Fuid-Structure Interactions. Accurate flow measurement is fundamental to the reliable and effective operation of hydraulic turbines, both under steady-state and transient conditions. The pressure-time (PT) method, which relies on the transformation of momentum into pressure to infer flow rate from pressure signals, serves as an absolute reference technique.

As the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources demands greater operational flexibility from hydropower systems, flow control has become increasingly important to mitigate harmful pressure fluctuations. The presentation discusses novel strategies to mitigate pressure pulsations during part-load operations.

The final part of the presentation addresses the fluid-structure interaction challenge by focusing on the accurate and efficient determination and understanding of added parameters mass, damping, and stiffness-which are essential for the safe and robust dynamic modelling of submerged structures. A novel approach is proposed to simultaneously determine all added parameters. Furthermore, force decomposition in canonical test cases is performed to provide deeper insight into hydrodynamic damping mechanisms and enhance predictive modelling of turbine behavior under various flow regimes.

 

Biography

Prof. Michel Cervantes was born in 1968 and completed all his primary/high school and university education in France. He joined Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Sweden, in 2000 for his PhD study. He received his PhD degree in May 2003. He was promoted as Docent (ability to lead research) in 2007 and Professor in 2010. Prof. Michel Cervantes works as a senior researcher and leader in numerous projects. He supervises PhD students (currently 7) and supports post-docs (currently 9). He has a wide international network and collaborates closely with industry. As a teacher/adviser, he has been involved in several courses for undergraduates and PhD students. About 140 papers of various kinds have been extensively published in international journals or conference proceedings (h-index36/i10-index 108).

Professor Cervantes is for the moment:

-    Director of the research school within the Swedish Hydropower Centre

-    Responsible for the experimental fluid mechanics within the Swedish Hydropower Centre

-    Coordinator and main applicant of the European project RevHydro

-    Senior researcher within the Swedish Hydropower Centre
